The Stream music of the T"rung (Suoi Dan T"rung)
Indspillet i Vietnam omkring 1973 med Central Vietnam Traditionelle Musik og Sang orkester. Denne gruppe blev dannet i 1962, og havde 60 medlemmer, som optrådte og turnerede, foruden at rejse rundt og optegne folkemusik og sange. Dirigenter Nguyen Chinh og Tran Quy. Overført fra vinylplade presset i Czeckoslovakia på plademærket Dihavina. Foruden monokord (Dan Bau) anvendes usædvanlig et minoritets-instrument som Trung xylofon med vandrette hængende bambusrør samt hånd-klap instrumentet Klong Put. Numrene er senere indspillet i mange andre udgaver, men den originale udgave er absolut den bedste. Med 4 siders hæfte på svensk.

Dette er glimrende introduktion til vietnamesisk musik. Både underholdende og lærerig. De 14 numre kommer langt rundt fra folkemusik til det moderne fra nord til syd, fra lavlandet til højlandet. Glimrede hæfte med mange oplysninger og introduktion er velskrevet og præsenterer hver kunstner og sange foruden at sætte musikken ind i sammenhæng med Vietnams musikalske kultur.

Det varierede udvalg dækker mange af Vietnams stilarter fra den trance-lignende sang fra sangerinden Huy Du, til den virtuose og bluesagtige "Cau Doi Cau Cho" fra den blinde dan nguyet (tostrenget lut) spiller Kim Sinh. Eller det blide gammeldags-moderne arrangement af den traditionelle sang fra Huong Thanh som bor i Paris, til helt moderne "Toi Yeu" fra popstjernen Quang Linh. Selvfølgelig er der vestlige indflydelser i dagens Vietnam, men landet har indtil nu holdt sig fri af dominansen af guitar og keyboard. På to spændende numre er solo-instrumentet et-strengede Dan Bao, som både kan høres i en jazzy shuffle "Blue Requiem" med Blue Asia, og en helt uventet udgave af country-pop favoritten (Ghost) Riders in the Sky.

The Rough Guide to the Music of Vietnam is an excellent and surprisingly thorough introduction, which, like the vast majority of the Rough Guides series, is highly entertaining while being highly educational - my favorite way to be introduced to new music! The fourteen tracks on the album cover an enormous amount of ground, folk to modern, Northern to Southern, and so on. Great liner notes complete the package. Standout tracks on the disc include the hauntingly bluesy "Cau Doi Cau Cho" from blind dan nguyet player Kim Sinh, the edgy and modern "Toi Yeu" from pop star Quang Linh, and the jazzy "Blue Requiem" from Blue Asia.

ANBEFALES Quoc Trung: Doung Xa Van dam (The Road to Infinity): �The Road To Infinity� (Doung Xa Van dam) af komponisten og arrangøren Quoc Trung svarer stort set til første halvdel af koncerten. Det er en imponerende suite spillet af et orkester med traditionelle vietnamesiske instrumenter og både mandlig og kvindelige sanger samt Quoc Trung selv på keyboards, samples og loops. Cd�en indeholder 7 flotte kompositioner, bl. a. The Road to Infinity og Wishing Upon The Mon. Quoc Trung giver traditionel vietnamesisk musik (cheo, quan ho and hat xam) en uortodokse forandringer. Hans fremragende arrangementer har ikke kun genskabt den lyriske oplevelse, men også bibeholdt den oprindelige følelse. Ved at sende traditionelle vietnamesiske instrumenter imod verdensmusik-rytmer, har han skabt noget af det flotteste, eksotiske musik der findes i dag. Thanh Lam har en stor mørk og udtryksfuld stemme fyldt med følelser. Hendes varme vibrato er næsten hypnotiserende, og hun leverer 8 smukke dramatiske ballader.
Thanh Lam has a huge, husky, and tangy voice filled with deep emotion. She can sports a prodigious technique of holding on to her vibrato to warm up the notes, and then releasing them into the empty air, leaving the piano to fill in the space. The way she hoarsens up her vocals sounds so damn hypnotizing. And of course, her energetic power always promises pain and glory in her delivery. In the title track. She caresses the harmonies, massages the words, and efficiently breaks down her virtuoso flows. 80 kr.
T�ng Duong: Chay Tron - Tung Duong er det varmeste navn på den Vietnamesiske musikscene når det kommer til mandlige sangere. Hans karismatisk udstråling og en flot af alsidig stemme gør ham en meget dygtig sanger. Hans CD � Chay tron � er produceret af en af Vietnams førende producere Le Minh Son, hvilket i sig selv er et kvalitetsstempel. Flotte arrangementer og der er også nogle smukke soloer på monocord spillet af Hoi Anh. 80 kr.
Cung Dan Xua: Sange af Van Cao Den vietnamesiske nationalkomponist Van Cao døde i 1995, 71 år gammel. CDen � Tuyen T�p Ca Kh�c Van Cao: Cung D�n Xua� bringer 11 af hans mest kendte sange med sangerinderne �nh Tuyet, Hong Nhung, Thanh Thuy, Tam ca Ao Trang samt sangeren Cao Minh. Van Cao er født i 1923 og repræsenterer den �nye� tradition fra 30erne og 40erne med europæisk-inspirerede sange. Det er ikke blot romantiske kærlighedssange, men også en "anti-autoritær" strømning med vemodige sange der handler om det umulige i kærlighedsprojektet. Nøgleordet er tit længsel som i sangen om Truong Chi, en sang som typisk nok bygger på en traditionel vietnamesisk fortælling. En anden sang på CDen (fra de første år efter 1945) er Van Caos yndefulde og næsten mozartske L�ng T�i (Min landsby), der senere med stor effekt blev brugt i filmen Cyclo (Rickshaw). 80 kr. Huong Thanh: Mangustao (2004)
- Huong Thanh"s third album, following �Moon & Wind� and "Dragonfly". It shows the evolution of work that began with Nguyen Lê in 1995 with "Tales from Viêt-Nam". The leading thread in this work is still the mixing of Vietnams musical tradition with todays diversity of languages & techniques. Although Huong Thanhs voice remains entirely pure, this is not for purists. However, the purpose is not to westernize, or to jazzify the singing, nor to discard the accents which are so precious to the meaning & the music of the Vietnamese language. Whenever the melodies descend from pure tradition, they are fully respected ; when Nguyen Lê writes the melodies, poet Huong Nguy�n matches the accents of the lyrics with the melodic line. Huong Thanh: Dragonfly (2001)
I titelstykket kulminerer musik og sang med en følsom duel mellem en Vietnamesisk-parisiske Huong Thanh og Cameroon-New Yorker�en Richard Bona. CDens magi ligger i dets sammenblanding af den karakteristisk enhed og tradition af de vietnamesiske instrumenter og vokaler, med en pludselig tilstedeværelse af elektroniske instrumenter, jazz-grooves, bas og violiner og den afrikanske vokal. Kærlighedssangen "Graceful Bamboo" er et smukt eksempel på blandingen af sensuel vietnamesisk sang med de mange-facettede toner der omgiver Huong Thanhs blide følsomme stemme. Huong Thanh: "Moon And Wind" (1999)
CD"en består mest af traditionelle vietnamesiske numre. Den hedder "Moon And Wind" med undertitlen "New Sounds from Vi�t-Nam". Huong Thanh er født i Saigon, men har siden 1977 boet i Paris. Hun kommer fra en familie af kendte musikere, hendes far var Huu Phuoc, af de mest kendte Cai Luong sangere. Huong Thanh synger alle slags vietnamesisk traditionel musik, både fra nord, central, og syden - og på den anden side blander hun på CD"en med moderne lyde fra jazz og verdensmusik, uden dog at det sidste tager overhånd. Nguyen Lê: "Tales from Viêt-Nam" (1995) - anbefales varmt
Guitarristen Nguyen Lê er født i 1959 i Paris af vietnamesiske forældre. Han spiller guitar & elektrisk bas inspireret af jazz og Jimi Hendrix, og har udgivet en række jazz-plader. I 1995 udgav han CD"en "Tales from Viêt-Nam", et projekt med vietnamesisk musik, spillet af 8-mands orkester kombineret af jazz-musikere og traditionelle vietnamesiske musikere. Nguyen Lê siger selv at han "blander jazzmusikere medtraditionelle vietnamesiske musikere, og spiller de sange som min moder plejede at synge for mig". THANH LAM (vocal):
Working with Thanh Lam and exploring Vietnamese music has turned out to be one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences in my career. I felt a perfect and complete musical and personal affinity with all of the Vietnamese guest musicians who appeared on the album, and I cherish every note that each one of them contributed , as a precious gift. I was particularly impressed with the emotionally charged and divine beauty of the voice of Thanh Lam. The young, beautiful and phenomenal female singer from Hanoi, Thanh Lam, is currently the most successful Pop star in Vietnam. She has recorded 5 albums under her own name, which have been release both in Asia and the USA. Her latest Asian tour (1998/99) reached triumphant levels and drew crowds of up to 5000+ per night. She comes from a very famous musical family in Hanoi. Her father Thu�n Y�n, is a very renowned Vietnamese guitarist, pianist and composer. She is particularly known for her very unusual and atypical voice for an Asian singer. Her voice is dark and powerful and is incredibly expressive, and her stage appearance is extremely charismatic, in its own subtle way. She is a very beautiful and attractive woman, with complete style and class. Last year, she guest appeared at the Jazz festival in Montreux, Switzerland where she was invited to sing a duet with the French/Swiss Pop star Stephan Eicher. Recently, I had her as a guest on my TV show in Paris, and the French studio audience was literally in a state of chock, and in deep awe, after she delivered her first performance, an emotionally charged rendition of the song "Mot Thoang Tay Ho." One of the unique qualities of Thanh Lam is that she has the ability of communicating specific emotions even to people who do not understand Vietnamese lyrics. Some Vietnamese relatives that were hanging out in the studio when we recorded, were amazed at how well the non-Vietnamese musicians followed the emotional contour of the Vietnamese lyrics that Lam sang while we accompanied her, despite us not being able to understand the lyrics they we were accompanying. This is simply due to the fact that Lam is such an expressive performer, that the message of the song comes across to anyone no matter what.
NGUYEN QUOC TRUNG (keyboards):
Being the leading producer, musical director and keyboardist in Vietnam, Quoc Trung heads one of Vietnams most renowned bands "The Orient," and he has worked as a producer, keyboardist and musical director for a long list of leading artists in his homeland and neighboring countries, including Thanh Lam of course, and he has an extensive discography to his credit. He also owns his own studio in Hanoi, one of the most technically advanced in the country. On my"Asian Sessions" album, he contributed to a large degree with musical research as well as ideas for arrangements, etc., and he ended up nearly assuming a co-producer capacity on some of the Vietnamese tracks on the album. Quoc Trung is very well versed in modern Pop as well as Contemporary Jazz, but he also has a deep knowledge of traditional Vietnamese music. He was therefore an ideal collaborator for latest latest album project, on which I think that he delivered some absolutely tremendous keyboard work.
