En stilfærdig terrorist (The Quiet American)

Efter en roman af Graham Greene - i hovedrollen Michael Caine. USA 2002.

When the Tenth Month Comes
Bao gio cho den tháng Muoi

Director: Dang Nhat Minh - Vietnam 1984 - 90 min - black and white
A haunting portrait of one woman’s struggle with loss and personal sacrifice during the war, When the Tenth Month Comes is considered by many critics to be the greatest Vietnamese movie ever made. In the final days of the war, a beautiful young widow, Duyen, faces a daily struggle to take care of her young son and ailing father-in-law, all the while hiding from them the fact that her husband has recently been killed in battle. Keeping her secret burden to herself, she is befriended by the village schoolmaster, Khang, who agrees to fabricate letters from her dead husband in order to spare her family sorrow. As their friendship deepens, Duyen and Khang find themselves drawn closer to intimacy-a dangerous relationship if Duyen is to maintain her charade. The film resonates beautifully with the traditional Vietnamese precepts of duty and sacrifice, combined with aesthetic influences from centuries of traditional poetry, literature, and theater.

Nostalgia For The Countryside
Thuong Nho Đong Quê

Directed by Dang Nhat Minh - Vietnam 116 min
Set in a rice-growing village in Vietnam, this is a tale of crossroads where stories flow together like small rivers of sorrow. 17-year-old Nham has left school to care for his widowed mother, his little sister Minh, and his sister-in-law Ngu. Ngu, whose husband left to work in a coal mine five years ago and has only come home twice for a few days, lives in daily sadness and with a deep longing for him and a complete life. Nham and his family are visited by Quyen, who has come from America to revisit the village where she was raised by her aunt, Nhams relative. Quyen shares her nostalgia for her childhood with Nham as she remembers the places and the life she left before leaving her bad marriage. As Nham befriends her, his sexuality is awakened by her attractive personality and vivacious good looks. Ngu sees this attention being paid to Quyen by Nham and harbors a quiet jealousy. As Nham opens to his sexual feelings, his embarrassment drives him from Quyen but his sexuality is further awakened by innocent comfort given to Ngu. Nostalgia for the Countryside sweeps us through strong emotions as we experience the characters heartbreaks and sorrows.

Cyclo - Tran Anh Hung

Hùng's follow-up film, Cyclo (1995) has a similarly innocent protagonist, but this time the story is much more violent and the young protagonist becomes corrupted by gangs in his desire to escape poverty. Cyclo in particular has received international acclaim, and attained the Best Movie Prize at the 1995 Venice International Film Festival.

The Vertical Ray Of The Sun - Tran Anh Hung

This exquisitely measured film is about a family of three sisters and a brother. It's about intimacy, love and infidelity.
The youngest sister Lien (played by the director's partner Tran Nu Yen), lives with her brother Hai (Ngo Quang Hai), and she has a playful, wistfully incestuous relationship with him. She works in the cafe run by her oldest sister Suong whose photographer husband has intimate affairs elsewhere. Suong herself has a strange silent affair going with another man. The third sister has doubts about her husband's fidelity when he goes to Saigon on family business.
This is a film more about moments and theme than plot. For sheer beauty of frame and scene it's hard to go past The Vertical Ray of the Sun. The composition is exquisite in terms of colour, design and framing, the thematic use of water blends into each moment. You know that every single detail has been overseen by an aesthetic master. This is not a Hollywood action movie, the distance from that particular genre is great. But at the same time within his own time, within his aesthetics Tran portrays in intimate detail personal aspirations and doubts in an insidiously affecting way.

Buffalo Boy - Mua Len Trau

Directed by Dang Nhat Minh - Vietnam 2004 - 116 min
An old man named, Kim is telling his family history to his grand daughter, as she found the bones of his father. When he was a boy, Kim's father was ill, when their lands flooded. His two buffaloes have no forage. Kim takes the two buffaloes in search of good grass. He joins Lap's herding team, but One of the two buffaloes dies. Later he helps Det, who builds a new herding team with him, to reunite with his girl friend and their son, whom Det hasn't seen for 5 years.
When Kim hears his father is dying, he goes to U Minh. The father reveals the truth of Kim's ancestry. A couple of strangers help Kim put his father's corpse in a safe place in the water, until the flooding subsides and he can be properly buried.
Lap confirms what Kim's father told him as he died:--that Kim's true mother is the sister of Lap, whom Kim's father raped on a buffalo herding run. Kim tries to rape Det's wife. Det dies in a skirmish between Lap's and Kieng's buffalo herding teams. Kim adopts Det's son, Thieu.
In a voiceover, Kim says that the Japanese came in to drive out the French, and then were themselves driven out. This political change does not seem to affect rural Vietnam.

Heart & Minds (1974) DVD 2009

The title of this documentary was inspired by the mantra recited by those in charge of the Vietnam War: "In order to win the war, we must win the hearts and minds of the people." The failure to achieve this, coupled with the disastrous no-win policies of the higher-ups, is the nucleus of this film, Davis juxtaposes news footage of the Vietnam war with interviews conducted with its observers and participants, interspersing vignettes of the fatuous comments made by the generals and politicians. More controversy arose when Hearts and Minds won the Best Documentary Oscar.

Good Morning Vietnam (USA 1987)

Seneste "Yes Pinkville is still on the agenda, but recognize there are large costs against it and it's a film that's not in the climate of the time."

Go Tell the Spartans (USA 1978)

American war film Ted Post, starring Burt Lancaster, and based on Daniel Ford's 1967 novel Incident at Muc Waabout U.S. Army military advisors during the early part of the Vietnam War in 1964, a time when Daniel Ford was a correspondent in Vietnam for The NationThe story was inspired by a futile special forces operation in 1964 at Tan Hoa in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, an objective that turned out to an abandoned settlement containing only a field, an abandoned airstrip and three or four French gravestones. The graves inspired the film's title, taken from Simonides's epitaph to the three hundred soldiers who died fighting Persian invaders at Thermopylae, Greece: "Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie."

Heaven & Earth (USA 1993)

Heaven & Earth is a 1993 American biographical war drama film written and directed by Oliver Stone, and starring Tommy Lee Jones, Haing S. Ngor, Joan Chen, and Hiep Thi Le. The film was based on the books When Heaven and Earth Changed Places and Child of War, Woman of Peace, which Le Ly Hayslip wrote about her experiences during and after the Vietnam War.
Le Ly is a girl growing up in a Vietnamese village. Her life changes when the communist insurgents show up in the village to first fight the forces of France and then the United States. During the American involvement, Le Ly is captured and tortured by South Vietnamese government troops, and later raped by the Viet Cong because they suspect that she is a traitor.
Her family moves to Saigon and she is employed by a family there. The master of the household misleads her into believing that he genuinely cares for her, and she falls for him and gets pregnant by him. The master's wife becomes enraged and Le Ly's whole family is forced to move back to their former province. There she meets Steve Butler, a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. When she first meets him she is not interested in a boyfriend or marriage, having been through so much suffering. Steve falls for Le Ly and treats her very well, making a big difference in her life while in Vietnam.
The two leave Vietnam and move to the United States. Their life together begins well, but years of killing and life in the bush have taken their toll on Steve who becomes uncontrollably violent. The relationship falters, despite Le Ly's attempts to reconcile with Steve. After an impassioned plea by Le Ly for Steve to come back to her, he commits suicide. Many years following this tragic experience, Le Ly returns to Vietnam with her sons and shows them where she came from.
